So while you get really colorful images of Brachioteuthis in the wild... when you collect them you get less than stellar colours... however morphology looks outstanding. Here you can see the full squid, upper & lower beak, and the gladius (pen). This is large for a brachioteuthid

Since tomorrow and Monday is preparation day for a research symposium... today is the day to go ALL out on brachioteuthis... so bringing back the big guns! The first VERY clear video footage of Brachioteuthis in the water column at 1000 m deep! Footage by Schmidt Ocean

So these two individuals were found off the coast of Chile in February of this year. Two Brachioteuthis species are believed to be from around this region "B. picta" and "B. riisei", however who knows if these are the actual species here, no good descriptions 2/3ish.

Now I have watched these videos FOREVER to try and provide a "perhaps species" and I have always leaned more towards B. picta. The arrows in the photo point to presumably four "large" chromatophores on the dorsal head... characteristic of "B. picta" The tip also looks curved! 3/4

Here's a close up of the tentacle club which upon inspection I dont see the traditional B. picta curve (but it could be an angle of photo capture) But it's actually kinda organized compared to many of the individuals in collections. Who knows this could be a brand new Brachio!

Lastly it should be noted that this is still a complicated group. ALL species names in " quotations" are speculative... we are at a stage where we cannot fully point out some species fully. This specimen is the new mystery squid 2024! #Bestsquid #TeamBrachioteuthis #Squidtember

HA you thought Brachioteuthis Saturday was over... you thought wrong! Brachioteuthidae skin architecture!!! So brachioteuthids have some of the coolest skin texture... honestly only rivaled by Pholido and Lepidoteuthis. This Beautiful net structure on the mantle of Slosarczykovia

Now we have Brachioteuthis (Photos by yours truly). In Males of likely most (currently unknown) they develop wart like structures ONLY on the mantle. However, both male and females have a very much "net" like structure on the arms, fins, and the head. And you can see that!
