Schools should’ve heard from either the DOE or their principals by now, but here in D17 our babies, our staffers, and our buildings are okay. Maybe shaken up a bit, but okay. Concerns will be escalated as they arise, and parents will be kept up to date on any next steps.

Any parents who haven’t heard from either the DOE or their child’s school should double check that they have a NYC Schools Account (NYCSA) and that the contact info inside is current. Check w/your child’s parent coordinator to get connectivity info if you never had an account.

Have you heard? District 17, in partnership with Literacy Academy Collective, is crafting a school for students with dyslexia! So excited to witness this work coming alive!

Good evening, y’all. A quick note. Over the last week, we’ve watched a horrific and unfortunately familiar narrative form around Haitian migrants who have legally and rightfully taken up residence in an Ohio town. It is disgusting and it is morally repugnant, but it +

is, again, familiar. Moreover, some of us remember what it was like the last time Haitians received this amount of attention on a national scale. The racist and deeply problematic scapegoating not only worsened a public health crisis, but it also traumatized a generation of+

lawful residents who didn’t deserve the bullying and harassment then, but also never got the apology their deserved. But the trauma is why I’m talking about this today. We can simplify this by saying “nobody’s paying attention” or “that’s not a big deal,” but +

thats little more than the approach in the 90s, and we’re not repeating history. The goal is to ensure that no matter what, all of the children of District 17, no matter where they come from, feel safe and welcome and a part of our community. +

We are proactively discussing how to reinforce not just the respect for all structure in our schools, but also ensuring we empower students to stand up for each other and stop bullying in its tracks, especially the kind that turns a nationalistic identity into a pejorative. +

We will not allow another generation of children to be traumatized by a thoughtless, conspiratorial, and desperate person with a bullhorn and a cult following. +

We will continue to wrap our arms around the children of District 17, because even though today it is Haitians, tomorrow it could be someone else, and we will always work to keep this sort of xenophobia away from our extremely diverse community.
