It seems like every single day there is a new Routledge Handbook being published. Which defeats the purpose of a "handbook" because frankly no one has that many hands... or hours in their life. Feel free to quote this tweet in the upcoming Routledge Handbook of cynicism.

I fully agree, this current debate on AI in Translation reminds me so much of the 'God of the gaps' argument against atheism. And history shows that line of argument to be extremely weak bc the gaps reduce with every new development.

I love the "AI is racist" argument against automatic translation/interpreting - did human interpreters stop being racist overnight when LLMs came out and did I miss that memo somehow? Bc racism is pretty much endemic in professions that pride themselves on linguistic purity.

This is not a matter of 'time will tell'. Time has told but people are refusing to listen bc they dislike the tale.

Sometimes choosing the 'middle' between two sides is the opposite of neutrality. Sometimes it only strengthens the position of the side that benefits from the false equivalence. We have seen it at work with climate scientists vs deniers but I can think of one other example...

There is a pathetic side to white supremacy. They are fighting a reality that is inevitable and they will lose. The future is not theirs. The future is diverse. But the windmills they are fighting are human beings. Paying the price of decades of complacency with racism.
