Thank you to Cathie Dunn – historical fiction & history and all the hosts who took part in the book tour for Oscar’s Tale (too many to mention individually) and also to all those who were kind enough to RT or like the posts. All very much appreciated. Historia – the HWA The Historical Fiction Company #historicalfiction

Most Viking Age sword handles from Norway had a shaped wooden core, often wrapped with leather, cloth, or wire, and finished with metal ferrules—but there were also rare examples in antler, straw, or solid metal, showing both practical grip design and signs of status.

The Strickland brooch - it is really beautiful and intricate, and I enjoyed zooming into the zoomorphic detail... Mid ninth century, now in the British museum - card below #FindsFriday

Another lovely Icelandic vista with distant snow capped mountains and a little brook. Trying to identify the fluffy white flowers. I think locally they’re called ‘Klofifa’ but are prob Eriophorum (cotton Grass). Waiting for a botanist friend to confirm. Any thoughts anyone?

L’Anse aux Meadows, the only Norse site known in North America (apart from Greenland). It was excavated in the 1960s and gives a remarkable snapshot of life there, with the settlement occupied on and off for a ten year period over 30 years at the start of 11thC #lanseauxmeadows
