So it turns out that Pentecost was pretty awesome in the middle ages. Churches had a "Holy Ghost Hole" in the ceiling, which would open during the "veni sancte spiritus" sequence. While the choirboys made a loud ruckus (the "rushing wind"), a large disk the size of a cartwheel

“It’s all Trump’s fault. He made them mad. So what could they do but riot?” It’s an echo of the terror campaign in 2020, when they said: “look at all these riots. Trump makes people so mad. We can’t elect him again, because then they’ll be even more mad!” It’s the logic of a

One of the unexplored reasons for a tax on remittances is that many immigrants sending money home are also receiving US taxpayer-funded welfare (though it's so far been impossible to measure the number), meaning we're subsidizing remittances, and should get some of that back.

Wonderful thread on American Catholics’ loss of connection to their local parish. When my dad, a longtime lapsed Catholic, moved to an assisted living facility near me, people from the nearby parish would visit him, and the priest even checked in a few times to see if he needed

One of the core contradictions in the land sale pitch: “You can’t trust the feds to manage the land.” Got it. “But you should trust the feds to sell it off responsibly, using vague, unenforceable guidelines… written by the feds.” Where do I sign?

Walmart gets 25% of its revenue from SNAP. Don’t you think they (and other similarly situated companies) have well paid lobbyists embedded in DC, fighting to preserve and expand these benefits programs? Fighting RFK and MAHA? Yes, these videos are vile. But don’t lose sight of

Apparently some education wonks, after years of grumbling about the success and rapid growth of classical education—and smearing it as the project of Christian White Nationalists—now begrudgingly admit it has some value, mainly in academic rigor and classroom discipline. But,

This, plus you are subjected to dueling playlists from multiple Bluetooth speakers. Oh, and they only have the free Spotify so you get bombarded with commercials too, which play at even louder volume! I’d say ban the speakers, but the sort of people who do this wouldn’t comply

Al this Jennifer Love Hewitt discourse is bringing back painful Party of Five memories of how she left Bailey for a spin-off show (which failed immediately) and rejected him again when he went to NYC to try to get her back. You should have married him, Sarah!! We could have had a

What, specifically, does “contribute to the economy” mean? If it’s “had a job and bought things”, then no, I’m not impressed. Those are basic things anyone does in his own self-interest, and we don’t have to be grateful, we don’t owe them anything for that. So much immigration

I’m bemused by all the angry responses here. I had no idea people are so invested in the idea that Joseph and Mary had sex. They seem to reject the idea that anything is sacred, that sacred means set apart. Maybe there’s no sacrality in their religion? Bizarre.
