Gentleman Farmer is among my long term goals. But land is expensive here. Unimproved land is more cost effective, but not close to my home. She thinks the farm could be a ways away with a Great Pyrenees and pair of donkeys to take care of business. Anyone farmed offsite before?

I do not like summer homes. Not downsizing your first home is one thing. But if you want to come into a town you have no ties to, buy a second home that would have been good for a family, and live in it five months out of the year? We are not going to be friends.

Not all second homes are bad. New England has a long tradition of camps and lake cottages. They are not built to live in the whole year, and most of them are too small for a family. It is the people with a three bedroom home in the center of town as their summer house I dislike.

Rural America is ageing out of existence. New England grew over these years. But it grew older too. Vermont and New Hampshire are in a three-way tie with Florida for the second highest median age at 43. Maine is the oldest state at 45. All of them have more seniors than minors.

This is the most important thing I have ever written. It would mean a lot to me if you read it, and shared it with the fathers and sons in your life. You can find the link in my profile.

The older I get the more unnatural and dehumanizing commercial air travel feels to me. The product of high time preference forced upon us by a decayed culture which knows no leisure. Given the choice I would rather see the landscape than to fly over it.

4,000 weeks. That is all a life is. We spend a quarter of that just growing up. We talk about living a "full" life, but filling our days is not a good thing. Having time is a good thing. Slowing down and enjoying life is a good thing.

Over the weekend someone called out "Hey big man." Realizing they meant me I turned around, and found a crusty old man in a Vietnam vet hat. "You need to work out." I simply nodded, shook his hand, and walked away.

Someone tried to "no true countryman" me yesterday. True I am no farmer, or homesteader, or even crunchy. But a man need not derive his income from agricultural workings to care about them. Or be born of a place to hold to the local ways. And to oppose destruction of its culture.

One of the things I am most looking forward to about being married is having our weekends together again. Currently I am off Saturday and Sunday, and she is off Monday and Tuesday. But she will go down to part time and that will give us more time together.

The world is moving too fast. I might need to accept being left behind at some point. But the thought of that bothers me less and less.
