The University of Washington Center for Human Rights released a report today on 16 cases of enforced disappearances by ICE in Washington State since Trump took office, including 14 individuals and 2 families. These are serious abuses in which the state denies info about those detained and deny them basic legal rights.

This new report focuses on two specific human rights abuses: ➡️ refoulement: sending a person in gov custody to a place where they will be in danger ➡️ enforced disappearance: depriving a person in gov custody of liberty and denying information about their whereabouts

Using multiple data sources, researchers identified and documented cases of such abuses during recent months, several of which have not previously been reported:

While primary responsibility for these abuses rests on the federal gov, the report also documents the involvement of local public and private institutions: ➡️ Sea-Tac Airport ➡️ King County Intl Airport ➡️ WA Dept of Corrections ➡️ Signature Aviation ➡️ WA State Investment Board

In the report we look at two main ways ICE conducts removals & transfers: ➡️ Through a system of private chartered companies, known as ICE Air ➡️ Through commercial airlines, including at Sea-Tac Intl Airport, with carriers such as Alaska, Delta, Qatar Airways, United, & others

By cross referencing docs, researchers created a snapshot of deportations on a single day in WA state. On 3/8/25, 11 people were booked out from NWDC, incl. 6 Venezuelan men sent to CECOT prison in El Salvador via TX, flown out of King County Intl Airport on a Global X flight.

I remain surprised that this hasn’t been a bigger scandal. The Trump admin has been moving to drop multiple prosecutions against very serious MS-13 lieutenants and leaders to avoid having them testify about Trump ally Nayib Bukele’s prior connections to the gang.

ICE is beyond reform and should be abolished.
