Mermaid folklorist chiming in: 1. This is bloody excellent! 2. Mermaids (sing it with me) aren’t white: Mami Wata from West Africa and Yawkyawks from Australia predate Ariel. 3. The oldest ‘western’ mermaid was Syrian, her name was Atargatis. 4. Mermaids are human constructs!
