Pain is often a central part of the PAD disease experience, yet the there is so much that we don’t know, and ischemia is only a part of the story. In this Circulation statement, we highlight the need for a better understanding of pain and use of multimodal pain management in PAD

The need for multimodal pain management starts with the biological origin of pain, as ischemic, nociceptive, neuropathic, and inflammatory mechanisms all play a role

However, the biological factors of pain must be understood in the context of the social and psychological factors in which pain develops. Much of the relationship between this new biopsychosocial model of PAD pain and outcomes remains understudied.
