Retruning to MPs alone the power to choose their leaders is the single most effective thing the Conservatives could do in opposition to recover from a big historic defeat.

It feels like the tides are finally starting to turn on this.

Allowing a few thousand unelected & unaccountable people to appoint a Prime Minister is fundamentally anti-democratic.

The choice should be returned to elected MPs, who are answerable to the public for their choices.

The bbc news this morning said that after the statement from the first minister yesterday the snp has 28 days from yesterday to fill the vacancy. That is wrong. Yousaf has not stood down as first minister yet.

Good idea to increase the mandatory minimum 6 month sentence. Probably worthwhile to increase funding for Police, Courts, Prisons and the criminal justice system generally so as to catch, prosecute and imprison more offenders and more quickly. Oh. sentencingcouncil.org.uk/offences/magis…

A troll who threatened to kill JK Rowling 'with a big hammer' has been warned he faces jail. Glenn Mullen, 31, sent terrifying audio messages in Scottish Gaelic to the Harry Potter author and Labour MP Rosie Duffield on X, formerly Twitter, on 19 January last year.

Civil War's worth seeing, but I found it disappointing. Well made, but it's a post-apocalypse roadtrip with a dad thriller spliced on at the end. I thought the politics of it was obvious, without the ambiguity I'd expected, and the main characters' climax predictable.

If the first minister resigns office (rather than notifies intent to resign to allow a leadership election to take place) then there are 28 days to fill the vacancy - Scotland Act 1998, s 46 legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1998/46/…

These are some of the most extreme, authoritarian arguments presented to the Supreme Court in the modern era.

The lawyer for a former President literally defending a documented plot to overthrow an election as 'legal' - and a hypothetical *military coup.* All out in the open.

From the second paragraph of Alito's majority opinion in Dobbs and offered as a reason for overturning Roe: 'the Constitution makes no mention of abortion.' Guess what. The Constitution makes no mention of immunity to criminal prosecution of former Presidents. Just saying.

Hamas must send the hostages home and bring to an end the horrific ordeal of those currently being held and their loved ones.

Today, alongside 17 other nations, the UK has renewed its call for the immediate release of all hostages.

If Justice Jackson’s husband had worked hard to defeat the fake election claims by working hand-in-hand with the leaders of the Democrats could she hear this case? That is precisely Thomas’ situation.

I don't know whether reports of a 'vote of confidence in Humza Yousaf' are strictly accurate. But whether that really is the subject of the vote, or whether journalists just think it is, it's a bad development. Big votes like that should be about confidence in *the government*.

The way to make classical music more accessible to lots of different people of all ages and social backgrounds is to increase its visibility (or audibility) in free mainstream media such as the BBC.
