Good to be back The Royal College of Surgeons of England today sharing a panel with Ginny Bowbrick and #LozHarry discussing compassion fatigue in a day of rethinking resilience. #RFL2024
Guest writer colorectal surgeon and medical examiner Caris Grimes writes a blog about failing well after surgical complications, and how sometimes it can feel like pushing through a forcefield seeing that patient again. surgeonsarehumantoo.wordpress.com/2024/06/15/fai…
“I haven’t always failed well as a surgeon.” To err is human. Surgeons are not infallible. But how we face up to our actions can be very tough. Wise words from Caris Grimes #complications #patientsafety #humanfactors #secondvictim
Mark Bagnall PhD FRCS Caris Grimes These are indeed wise words. Have had to do a duty of candour recently and it is hard. It was made much more straight forward as there was good support for the process and well led by one of our senior surgeons.
Prof John Leeds Mark Bagnall PhD FRCS Caris Grimes It is essential to continue to look after patients who are concerned by a complication you have been involved in. (Of course if they wish it). Honesty and looking forwards nearly always strengthens rather than compromises the surgeon /patient relationship.
Mark Bagnall PhD FRCS Caris Grimes Hugh Gallagher Prof John Leeds I want to believe that times are changing. The phone call should be the start of the support process, to help the family come to terms. A badly timed phone call is better than no phone call. ( … open communication should reduce the number of complaints)
A helpful & rather wonderful blog from Caris Grimes about looking after patients & ourselves thro tough surgical complications. It's well written like her book audible.co.uk/pd/B0B3BQRRKD/… Must ask Caris if we can add it to our post-crs links for #COSMOS The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh Clinical Skills Managed Educational Network-CSMEN Ian Thomas
How do you learn from mistakes? Failure is a key part of learning, and developing a growth mindset is an essential skill required by newly appointed consultants and SAS doctors. Join the discussion on 'failing well' with consultant Caris Grimes on 13 Sept: ow.ly/8CN750So159
A pleasure to be at the ordination of Ian Nott today, with two bishops needed to make sure we stood in the right place! Rosemarie Mallett Bishop of Southwark Southwark Diocese
I ♥️ to see Dr. Glaucomflecken reducing stigma of Surgical #Complications, emotional reactions, and even therapy ! youtu.be/_ijezc2FduU?si… via YouTube Pairs well with Caris Grimes blog post surgeonsarehumantoo.wordpress.com/2024/06/15/fai… #SurgicalEducation #MedEd
Love this piece, Kenneth Walker - especially the "CBT" approach to surgical complications and the honesty around the shame response.
Well done Fran Brown PLY !
