For generations, the Central American community has contributed so much to the fabric of Los Angeles.

This is an effort that is over a decade in the making, and I'm grateful for the leadership of these organizations that have tireless advocated for this recognition of the Central American community.

Yesterday, Councilmembers Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez & Hugo Soto-Martínez presented a motion to establish a Central American Cultural District in Los Angeles, honoring the legacy and contributions of our Central American community. 🙌🏽 Let’s make this a reality 💪🏽💙

No one should have to live in fear of being separated from their families. But as we approach Election Day, there are countless residents who have called L.A. home for years who are grappling with this anxiety for themselves and their loved ones.

Los Angeles is a city built by immigrants, and a city that thrives because of immigrants. This community is part of the fabric of our city and it's time that we turn words into action to uplift and protect our friends, family members, and neighbors.

I was proud to stand with local organizations and advocates who have been on the frontlines on the steps of City Hall today to call on City leaders to move forward the Sanctuary City ordinance that we introduced last year.

We must use every tool at our disposal to protect immigrants and families in Los Angeles. The time is now. We can't afford to wait.

Today, Council unanimously voted to establish the City of Los Angeles as a “Sanctuary City,” effectively prohibiting any City resources, including property or personnel, from being utilized for any immigration enforcement. (🧵)

This vote also critically prohibits the direct and indirect sharing of data with federal immigration authorities.

This common sense policy codifies the approach that LA has prioritized for almost half a century: ensuring Angelenos can call for help when they need it without fear, regardless of immigration status.
