On this date (11/28/1920), the Bears and Cardinals launched the NFL's oldest rivalry when the Cards won 7-6. Controversy when loyal Cards' fans "escorted" the runner into the end zone for the winning TD--the only loss for the Staleys that year! Paddy Driscoll kicked the XP.

Without Dutch Sternaman, there might not be an NFL as we know it! Born otd in 1895, Dutch was the co-owner of the Bears during the early years, a top scoring leader, and a master of the team's finances, helping the Bears survive the cash-strapped 1920s. Happy birthday, Dutch!

Enjoyed working with the incredible Pigskin Dispatch to discuss one of the most important games in NFL history! But what does it have to do with a bunch of elephants in Chicago Stadium?

Jack M Silverstein (@readjack) 's Twitter Profile Photo

The latest in Pigskin Dispatch 🏈🎙️'s series on the NFL championship games, which ran from 1933 to 1965, the year before Super Bowl I. For Bears champs, Joe Ziemba did 1933, Jeff Berckes has 1940 (here) and '41, and I've got 1943 and 1946. Bear Down! youtube.com/watch?v=ipOLs_…

April 9, 1942, 83 years ago today, U.S. forces surrendered, prompting the horrific Bataan Death March. Among those captured was Motts Tonelli, former fullback for Notre Dame and the Chicago Cardinals. Upon release in '45, he returned to the NFL for one last game! Never forget...

Looking forward to speaking at the Chicago Literary Club on April 21 on an unusual topic: "I Told Mother Football Was Over for Me," a fictional account of how Chicago Bears' founder George Halas might react to the world (and the Bears!) today as a 130-year-old!

Two valuable starters of the Cardinals volunteered for the military. DB Pat Tillman was lost 21 years ago today, while on this date in 1942, FB Motts Tonelli had just survived the Bataan Death March and was destined to spend the rest of WWII as a POW. Incredible sacrifices!

Thanks to the Pigskin Dispatch podcast for allowing me to chat about the 1947 Chicago Cardinals NFL championship. A frozen field, gym shoes, Charley Trippi, and an 8-man line were highlights of this big game! player.captivate.fm/episode/fbde93…

The Arizona Cardinals are the NFL's oldest franchise, the only one dating back to the NINETEENTH CENTURY, starting on 61st and Racine. The Chicago Cardinals were another franchise that was part of an inaugural season of a league. Joe Ziemba x.com/readjack/statu…

Cards fullback Motts Tonelli survived Bataan and 42 months as a WWII POW, but never forgot the many who did not return. He said: "Memorial Day is when we need to honor and remember the sacrifice made by many to protect our freedom. We must never forget them."
