As part of our Athena Swan Cardiff Metropolitan University Cardiff School of Sport & Health Sciences, on #IWD2021 I #ChooseToChallenge implied masculinity through language and imagery. “Female” is often used in research titles about women, but the term “athlete” in a title implies the male gender

As part of our Athena Swan Cardiff Metropolitan University Cardiff School of Sport & Health Sciences, on #IWD2021 I #ChooseToChallenge the lack of female role models. We are working to change this through our Athena Swan work by our Women to Professor scheme and increasing the number of active female PhD supervisors

In the past 5 years, we (Cardiff School of Sport & Health Sciences ) have doubled the proportion of senior females (Reader/Prof) within the School from 14% to 36%

Next up Jack Talbot, PhD from our Athena Swan team Cardiff Metropolitan University Cardiff School of Sport & Health Sciences On #IWD2021 Jack's #IChooseToChallenge is to challenge gender biases and behaviour associated with toxic-masculinity in a historically male-dominated work environment

Next up Prof Katie Thirlaway from our Athena Swan team Cardiff Metropolitan University Cardiff School of Sport & Health Sciences On #IWD2021 Katie's #IChooseToChallenge is to challenge for better maternity, shared parental and adoption leave benefits

Next up is Dr Gemma Robinson from our Athena Swan team. Gemma's #ChooseToChallenge for #IWD2021 is to challenge the “Glass ceiling”. The intangible hierarchical impediment that prevents women from achieving elevated professional success. Cardiff Metropolitan University Cardiff School of Sport & Health Sciences

Next up Dr Rob Meyers from our Athena Swan team Cardiff Metropolitan University Cardiff School of Sport & Health Sciences On #IWD2021 Rob's #IChooseToChallenge is to challenge inequality

Next up Sofia Santos from our Athena Swan team Cardiff Metropolitan University Cardiff School of Sport & Health Sciences On #IWD2021 "Calling out gender (and maternity!) stereotypes, actions and inequality in academia and sports coaching! I haven’t been very good at this in the past so I #ChooseToChallenge myself today"

Next up Anna Stembridge (nee Mayes) from the Cardiff School of Sport & Health Sciences On #IWD2021, Anna's #ChooseToChallenge is to challenge and call out gender bias and inequity in the male-dominant board room settings and the lack of Women representation in both Senior Leadership and CEO NGB positions

Next up Robyn Pinder 🧠 from our Athena Swan team Cardiff Metropolitan University Cardiff School of Sport & Health Sciences On #IWD2021 Robyn's #IChooseToChallenge is to challenge the underrepresentation of women in leadership positions within sporting institutions at a local and national level

Next contribution from Stephen Mellalieu, part of our Athena Swan team Cardiff School of Sport & Health Sciences On #IWD2021 Steve's #ChooseToChallenge is to challenge the inequalities in research career progression female staff face due to flexible or part-time working status
