September 13 update from NWS Newport/Morehead: Extremely dangerous beach conditions are expected today as surf heights continue to build. Unfortunately, even worse surf conditions expected tomorrow, with a High Threat of rip currents likely through the upcoming weekend.

TRAVEL ALERT: NC-12 is closed between Frisco and Hatteras on Hatteras Island and between the Pony Pasture and the Ocracoke-South Dock Ferry Terminal on Ocracoke Island. Both closures are due to ocean overwash and dune breaches. Both locations expected to reopen by 3 p.m. today.

Great news! NC12 on the north end of Ocracoke Island has reopened, and ferry service between Hatteras and Ocracoke will resume with the 5 p.m. departure from Hatteras. Please note that there are sections of NC12 with sand and water on the roadway, so please drive carefully!

12:30 p.m. update from N.C. Dept. of Transportation: Because of continued ocean over wash today & confidence over wash will again be a safety concern at tonight's 7 p.m. high tide, N.C. Highway 12 between the Pony Pens & ferry terminal will remain closed until tomorrow afternoon.
