In an ideal world where expert viva examiners have time to read and think about every dissertation chapter, should whether those chapters are published affect the evaluation?

📣 New Paper Alert! 🥩 how revolting is a lab-made steak? 🧀 and lab-made cheese? ☕️ how about lab-made coffee? I am SO excited to share my new paper on the acceptance of #culturedfoods Journal of Environmental Psychology 🌍 Pre-proof: sciencedirect.com/science/articl… 1/n

I tend to agree with the majority here. Publication is arbitrary and peer review inconsistent. I can't stand when someone replies to a substantive criticism with "but it's published"

Heroic empirical work by Leonie Dudda Steven Verheyen et al. studying authors' self-stated reasons for replicating in 1075(!!) replication studies in psych. I have to say, I was very surprised by how rarely influence/importance is mentioned as a motivating factor. Worth a read!

The largest N = 9,220 and most comprehensive survey of its kind on how scientists perceive climate change and their role in tackling it. Well done to the authors for getting this out. See their intellectual and practical barrier model in particular 1/n #ClimateCrisis

1⃣ 91% of all scientists (strongly) agreed that addressing climate change requires fundamental changes to social, political and economic systems. 2⃣ 51% (strongly) agreed that scientists should engage more in advocacy, and 35% neither agreed nor disagreed. 👇 2/6 🧵

Providing teachers in Chile with stronger protection from dismissal is a double edged sword. It reduced turnover from 27% to 20%, among both the best and the worst teachers. But it also leads to falling test scores among students of the worst teachers. jhr.uwpress.org/content/early/…

As part of the research for my (someday upcoming) cancer book, I went to some “functional medicine” appointments to see what the appeal was and I am very glad I did it. Here are two parts of it that I think lead people to engage with non-evidence based healthcare. The first is

Behavior change is difficult. This review argues that across various domains, targeting some determinants of behavior (habits) is much more effective than others (beliefs, knowledge, general attitudes).

Quite an incredible move in French politics today that might reveal that we're in fact witnessing nothing less than a coup by Macron. Let me explain 🧵

Where do you get your fresh & clean Congressional speech data? We've been trying to get a hold of some for a project on issue opinion scaling, and it's been surprisingly hard to find. Is anyone generously sharing a clean scraped dataset? 😍 (Mitch McConnell for attention.)
