Re @NAOOrgUK why didn't HM Treasury tell anyone about this economic growth board? Also, given that Gove already has a "Cambridge Delivery Group" (whose membership hasn't been announced, & is talking about a development corporation, how does it fit with this governance structure??

NEW BLOGPOST: "The Cambridgeshire Unitaries debate 1994 lostcambridge.wordpress.com/2024/02/05/the… Turns out the options CambsUnitaries are exploring have been looked at before. But the councils of the 1990s are not the councils of today. What would the same processes reveal today?

NEW BLOGPOST: #LostCambridge 1994 - Cambridgeshire was given a big choice of how to make the county one with unitary councils. lostcambridge.wordpress.com/2024/02/05/the… Which one would you pick?

An effective way to "encourage greater understanding of the role of the different tiers of local government here in Cambridgeshire" would be to abolish some of them. If there's just one Council there's a pretty good chance you'll phone up the right one.

Ant Breach Ian CambsUnitaries I co-founded cambsunitaries.org.uk - we're just getting going. Really interested in Qs like min size, financial viability, assessing where to draw boundaries etc. The accountability/resident confusion/lack of delivery of current Cambridge authorities is dire.

Marie-Claude Hemming Andrew Pakes MP CECA Southern (*Waves*) from #Cambridge - this is the governance structure/mess the two cities find ourselves in. CambsUnitaries are campaigning to simplify this. Also Cambs has an *additional* constituency now. Worth co-hosting public debates? Cc CFCI Cambridge Association of Architects Cambridge Connect 🇺🇦

Our #Petersfield ward #Cambridge Council candidate Dr Christopher Wilkinson has altered us to the CambsUnitaries campaign: "A single unitary authority serving each area would make it clear who is responsible for local policies, [with] a clear democratic mandate to fix problems."

#GeneralElection candidates in Cambs & Peterborough should now have received an email from CambsUnitaries asking if they support replacing the complicated system of multi-tiered #localgov with something more straightforward

Melissa Jordan Antony Carpen CambsUnitaries We think town and parish councils should basically stay as they are - it’s the district/council/GCP/combined authority layers we’d like to simplify

Hi Sophie Corcoran - can I introduce CambsUnitaries - abolishing the CA and having real accountability with local authority areas better representing different parts of the County is part of the campaign x.com/sophielouisecc…

Many people agree that Cambridgeshire's local government arrangements badly need simplifying - this diagram shows how complex they are now - and I'm part of CambsUnitaries because I think two or three unitary councils across Cambridgeshire & Peterborough would be a better model.

If we want to fix English local government, then we need to sort out both the finances and the geography of councils. Our new briefing shows how to get it done by the end of the Parliament, and it all depends on a new map for English local government that looks like this:

An excellent thread (and article). Our current labyrinthine system of local government structure and funding is broken and holding large parts of the UK back. Here's one way of dealing with that without entrenching new inequalities. CambsUnitaries

Re Sam Davies The buck stops with ministers. They created the mess of a #localgov - in particular George Osborne signing off the GCP & mayoralty. Up to Angela Rayner & Matthew Pennycook MP to sort out this mess.

Also by Camcycle ***Look at all those meetings & consultations*** that someone has to keep track of. Hence CambsUnitaries campaigning to consolidate & condense things - esp duplication.
