#FossilFriday For our first social media posts, we highlight the iconic MB.Av.1010: a complete fossil of Archaeopteryx siemensii; a Late Jurassic species thought to be transitional between theropod dinosaurs & birds. On display at the Berlin Natural History Museum.

Luc Pouliot (Instagram)/Dan Simon (Pinterest).

Happy #MothMonday! This week we're focusing on the stunning Garden Tiger. The caterpillars are very hairy and are often known as "Woolly Bears". They feed on plants such as Common Nettle, docks and burdocks. butterfly-conservation.org/moths/garden-t… #MothsMatter 📷: Iain H Leach & David Green

Bob Chapman Dipterists Forum E. crassipennis is incredibly variable (like Phasia heliptera) - some Jersey ones featured here. The Central European key suggests crassipennis can have a dark abdomen but not the second species, E. oblonga.

Yay! Spectacular male of the Tachinid fly Phasia hemiptera in my garden just now. Larvae are parasitoids of shield bugs. Widespread but local (and I think, increasing).

Delighted to find my first Calliphora uralensis, I have previously been sent samples from Skellig Micheal Island in Co Kerry. This female was collected from Port Mor Sand Dunes, Belmullet Peninsula, Co Mayo, Republic of Ireland (20.vii.2025).

After yesterday's successes, went back to the same bit of #Dromore Woods today, to see if I could cop any more A-listers. Some decent finds:- 1. The Conopid fly, Conops quadrifasciatus; 2. An imperious Metopius fuscipennis ichneumon; 3. Dark Giant Horse Fly, Tabanus sudeticus.

Some nice tachinid flies from Isle of Portland recently: Thelaira leucozona from PBO garden (first UK record since added to GB list?), also Bithia modesta and Eriothrix prolixa in some of the old quarries. Still lots to ID.
