Cleaning out the accumulated sediment from the Lenoir Stormwater Wetland. This wetland is functining as designed by NC State Stormwater and improving water quality. City of Lenoir, NC is working Hoffman Paving & Grading Co to do the work. Caleb Mitchell is onsite to manage the effort.

Been a busy week! 1) Clean out a stormwater wetland in City of Lenoir, NC, 2) surveyed a dry detention basin with @NaomiPitts11, 3) ran spore sampling experiments in the rain with @EPAresearch, and 4) visited a Town of Cary, NC HOA bioretention cell that wants to be retrofit to wetland.

Which would you rather take back to the lab for colony counts: 1) A 1L Nalgene bottle full of sample on ice in a cooler, or 2) A 100 mm diameter filter? This sampling method study will help us decide how different the results are. In the meantime, just go with the flow.

I am looking for another MS student to work on a WRRI project that will enhance constructed wetland treatment using biochar, aeration, and duckweed.  I would be open to either an August 2023 or January 2024 start. Let me know if you or someone you know are interested!

Why do I always get stuck watering permeable pavers… Because I’m always testing out the infiltration of the pavement before and after maintenance. This test plot is only 2.5 months old, but lack of erosion control allowed the disturbed soil to clog it. More tests tomorrow!

Harvesting my backyard wetland plants led to some cool discoveries: 1) roots grow bigger in water than in a soil-gravel, and 2) preferencial flow paths occur beneath the roots within the gravel where anaerobic conditions prevail.

The wetland vegetation has really taken off since planting last August. N.C. DEQ 319 grant helped this sediment basin be retrofit to a wetland.

It’s been so long since I’ve Tweeted that they changed the name to X. It’s been so long since they came up with the water quality design storm that you need to multiply it by X.

Happy World Wetlands Day! I challenge you to tell at least one person (who does not already know) how important they are to protect and rebuild. Then challenge them to do the same!

This week I started as a Hydrologist with the USGS South Atlantic Water Science Center! Joyful for this next chapter! I’ll start by researching hydrologic extremes: (1) low flows and (2) flood flows Stay tuned for my NC State BAE PhD defense: Resilience of SCMs to floods, bioterrorism & industrial runoff

On Tuesday I successfully defended my PhD dissertation titled Resilience of Stormwater Control Measures to Floods, Bioterrorism, and Industrial Runoff. It was a fun and rewarding experience. Thanks to Bill Hunt for giving me this and many other opportunities to chase the storms!

Mass squishing: an ecological trap whereby a road and the associated vehicles impede amphibian migrating from wetland to upland habitat. These massive casualties are typically flattened at night during rainfall. Here is an example of a recent one on Rose Lane in Raleigh, NC.

So many decentralized rain gardens and bioretention cells! Many of them linear and in-series, which is an effective way to lay them out. Wonderful examples of green stormwater infrastructure Downtown Portland Sustainability at Portland State University Portland State Arch.

Hey Elon Musk and Donald J. Trump you are destroying Americans’ lives with #DOGE. For example, I made low flow estimates for communities and families to ensure they were discharging wastewater or withdrawing water in a manner that preserves that resource for future Americans.
