Two women that really stood out today at the trial were in attendance to support the Kowalski family. Janet Ayers, who has CRPS, flew in from St. Louis, made a huge poster, and stood outside the hospital for days. She came today “to stand for Maya and her family.” #takecareofmaya

Then there was Terri Weidle who drove from Jacksonville. She was also accused of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy and had her 15-year-old daughter taken from her for 5 months before the case was closed #takecareofmaya

DAY FIVE, TRIAL RECAP: Some highlights: Dr. Pradeep Chopra, a doctor at Brown University was hired as a third-party expert to assess Maya after Beata's death. He unequivocally confirmed Maya had CRPS, which led to Maya being released from state custody in 2017. (1 of 2)

He testified for hours on behalf of Maya, and said that overall the ketamine helped her. He described the pain of CRPS as being like sticking a hand in a "hot fire stove." The emotional distress from being separated from her family could also have triggered her CRPS to flare up.

Meg Bolson, whose son also has CRPS, became close with Beata when they connected on the Facebook group, Ferocious Fighters, a support group for CRPS. "She was really upset," says Meg, about the last time she spoke to Beata, and just a day before her death. (1/2) #takecareofmaya

"She had given up hope. She shared that Maya was crying in the hearing and that she just wanted a hug, and they wouldn't let her even hug her daughter. She said she didn't see a way that this would ever end." ( 2 of 2) #takecareofmaya

Detective Jarek Szalbirak started off the Kowalski/JHACH trial this morning with heartbreaking testimony about the day of Beata's death. Szalbirak has investigated around 500 suicides in Sarasota County, and was called to the Kowalski home to investigate. (1 of 4) #takecareofmaya

He commented on the two suicide notes Beata left behind, which he thinks speaks to the reasons why she took her life. The jury was visibly upset by the testimony. (2 of 4) #takecareofmaya

Former JHACH social worker Debra Hansen, who now works at a boarding school in New Hampshire, also testified and said she met the family when Maya was admitted into the PICU to do a psychosocial evaluation. (3 of 4) #takecareofmaya

"They were distressed parents," she said, and it seemed like they just wanted to help their daughter Maya. She also "did not see any indication of Munchausen syndrome by proxy." Jack Kowalski is about to testify. (4 of 4) #takecareofmaya

The world heard Maya Kowalski’s heartbreaking story in the award-winning documentary film Take Care of Maya. Maya's strength and persistence are likely to result in critical reforms to the system and we’re deeply honored to have her join us at #CrimeCon2024.

Can't wait to speak at the American Bar Association conference about why films like Take Care of Maya are needed and what the parent representation legal community can do to better address cases like Maya's. See you Friday at The Ritz-Carlton Tysons Corner. #takecareofmaya
