In 1991, the Minorities Commission Report found that were two justice systems in NY: one for whites & one for PoC & the poor. The 2020 Johnson report found little change & a “second class” justice system remains for NY PoC.

In the 22 years btwn the Minorities Commission & the Johnson reports little has changed to address racism in the courts. “You can take the 1988 report tear off the front cover & put on an Oct. 2020 cover” said Justice Troy Webber of the Franklin H. Williams Judicial Commission.

“Racism is baked into the system,” said Andy Scherer of New York Law School, speaking on eviction proceedings, which he noted are among “the harshest civil penalties.”

Lacking in both reports are litigants & community member perspectives. We must continue the work to undo the systemic racism that pervade the court systems we work in, says LSNYC Executive Director Raun Rasmussen, and today’s symposium is part of that process.
