Getting lots of questions on spraying corn for southern rust. As is always the case, the answer is "It depends..." What does it depend on? Growth Stage! See table 2 in this Crop Protection Network pub which lays out the critical growth stages for fungicide apps: cropprotectionnetwork.org/publications/a….

Some r starting to see some black on r around those rust pustules. Much of the black spores/spots are still southern rust where it switches to black teliospores late season n attempt to survive. It's NOT all tar spot. Thanks 4 the pic Lily Ziehmer (Woitaszewski)! FMI cropprotectionnetwork.org/publications/a…

Bananas feel eternal. Always there, always cheap, always the same. But that’s an illusion. There is an emergency. A devastating disease - Banana Xanthomonas Wilt (BXW) - is ripping through East Africa. Once a plant is infected, it wilts, fills with yellow slime, the fruit

Ugly ears. Some may contain mycotoxins. Test grain and whole-plant silage for mycotoxins if 10% or more ears have rot. Obtaining a good sample for testing is critical for accurate results. Read more at cropprotectionnetwork.org/publications/g…. Damon L. Smith Tom Allen Martin Chilvers

Wind gusts around 35-45 mph are expected on Saturday, with the relative humidity dropping to the 30-35% range in the afternoon. Combined with the dry weather conditions we’ve been seeing, elevated fire danger is expected on Saturday.

Hot and windy tomorrow with highs in the upper-80s to low-90s and wind gusts of 35-45 mph (locally up to 50 mph). Combined with recent dry conditions, we'll see elevated fire weather concerns tomorrow afternoon and evening. Use extra caution out there!

Fusarium stalk rot causes shredded pith that may be tan to light pink. Brown streaks may be observed on the lower internodes. The fungi overwinter in corn residue, other dead plant residue, and in corn seed. Resistance to Fusarium stalk rot is available. Rotation and tillage

Strong winds are arriving into the region as we start the new week. At times, winds may gust between 35 and 45 mph through Tuesday afternoon. Fire danger will be elevated, so use extreme caution outdoors.

The precautionary principle said: “Don’t give babies peanuts. It might cause allergies.” That advice? Dead wrong. And it caused a massive rise in peanut allergies. But then…scientists reversed course. And saved 40,000 kids from a lifetime of fear 🧵1/

Those with travel or outdoor plans this weekend should monitor the forecast for Saturday, as a quick moving system could bring accumulating snow to parts of the region. There is still uncertainty in the snowfall amount/location, but you should be prepared for impacts to travel.

Mild today with some sprinkles across southwestern MN. However, a taste of winter is on the way. Rain and snow begins tonight and through Saturday evening. Much colder temperatures for the weekend and to start the work week.
