My thoughts on Budget 2024

The larger question is, why should the government bear the burden of the dual responsibility of managing and monitoring healthcare when, despite the best intent and effort, it fails to do justice to both roles.

Why can’t the government stick to the monitoring role while leaving the management to the private sector? This way, it can devote quality time and effort to monitor the private sector performance, and focus on key issues

like raising public awareness about health and hygiene, running preventive health camps and running nation-wide campaigns for promoting wellness and wellbeing of the society at large, free of the ills of smoking, obesity, food adulteration, and environmental pollution.

If the government continues to uphold the status quo, the cascading effect will make hospitals cesspools of illcit and nefarious activities, more than inept and inefficient work processes, as the Kolkata hospital case has shown us.

In my opinion, a sustainable solution to this problem will emerge only if (and when) if the government plays the role of a neutral watchdog, monitoring the performance of private players.
