Monty Panesar announcing his political candidacy and withdrawing a week later is impressive, but nothing will ever beat rugby league legend Mal Meninga announcing himself as a candidate and quitting literally 28 seconds later.

This post of mine seems to have become some sort of meme and Reddit thread and Unilad news story, all with my name and Twitter handle cut off. I feel like I'm in a George Costanza storyline. It's like buying someone a big salad and not getting the credit for it.

Jerry Seinfeld turns 70 today. If that's not mind-blowing enough, he is now older than Billye Ree Wallace was when she played his Nana in Seinfeld.

I can tell you the capital city of Kyrgyzstan or what year Queen Victoria was born but my four-year-old asks 'Why are all the people on Bluey dogs?' and I'm lost for answers.

I’ve always loved the Seinfeld finale, thought it perfectly summed up the show and the characters. Never understood the hate for it and glad to see it’s belatedly getting a bit of love in conjunction with the Curb Your Enthusiasm finale.

In 1930, James Scullin managed to convince a reluctant King George V to appoint the first Australian-born governor general. Thirty years later Robert Menzies was still nominating British army officers. A prime minister’s choice of GG says a lot about their vision for the country.

As far back as 2001, New Zealand simultaneously had a female prime minister, opposition leader, governor general and chief justice. At that point Australia had never had a woman in any of those roles.

While the Stawell Gift is flooded, it's a good time to rewatch the 1996 Stawell women's 400m final, when Cathy Freeman was given a 54m handicap, got shoved in the final straight, and still won the race. Enjoy.

I won the Victorian Quizzing Championship today but I did have the distinct advantage of being the answer to one of the questions.

Think I probably first saw M. Emmet Walsh as Tim's father-in-law in Home Improvement, one of those great character actors who seemed to turn up in everything.

Ninety years ago today, Katharine Hepburn won the first of her 4 Best Actress Oscars. She beat May Robson, who was not only the first Australian Oscar nominee but, having been born in Moama in 1858, was also the earliest born person ever nominated for an Academy Award.

A small child walked up to me today, stared for a while, said “you’re the guy off that show”, and walked away again.

This is the glamorous life of a Z-grade celebrity.

At the Australian athletic championships on this day in 1956, one of the great acts of sportsmanship. John Landy stops running, turns back to check on fallen runner Ron Clarke, then makes up all the ground he lost and wins the race anyway.
