This week in 1989, Match Of The Day celebrated its 25th birthday with a special show looking back over the years. During the broadcast, Barry Davies asked Jimmy Hill about the impact that television has had on football. As usual, Hill was on the money.

My new book is out in a month. It is an unprecedented examination of the state of the language of football, it has 164 footnotes (too many), 20 diagrams (not enough) and one mildly awkward interview with someone who misused "embryonic league table" in a match report 12 years ago.

Today marks 23 years since Brian Moore passed away. This was ITV’s moving tribute to him shortly after his death. He will always be remembered as one of the greatest football commentators/presenters we’ve ever had. A true gentleman of the game. ❤️
