📣Rave review for Prof. Ward Farnsworth's newest book—all of his books, actually!—in Claremont Institute's Review of Books, from Joseph Epstein. Read it in its entirety: claremontreviewofbooks.com/exempli-gratia/

CoachPalmer I don't play Scrabble or use the Scrabble dictionary, but at a recent dictionary exhibit (thank you, Bryan A. Garner and Jack Lynch), I encountered plenty of English dictionaries past and present. Do you have an example of a word you wish weren't included? 🙂

Query for everyone (seriously): Why should we concern ourselves with matters of style—in the copyediting sense? What’s the real rationale?

It was 114 years ago yesterday that my grandfather, Meade F. Griffin, received this book as a Christmas present. He was 16. He went on to a distinguished career as a lawyer and judge. He died a few months before my 16th. I treasure the books bearing his ownership signature.

mrbobomonster The OED One of the most interesting things I learned from Bryan A. Garner's 2021 book Taming the Tongue in the Heyday of English Grammar is that there have been lively disagreements over how many parts of speech there are, what they are, and where words belong in them. Still not over!

I’m rearranging my “Books by Friends” category and have decided that Judge Posner is definitely in. We had our tussle in The New Republic in 2012, but our last interaction was quite genial. And in 2005 and 2006 he signed books to me “with affection.” He’s a friend.

“We’re not a king. We’re not a king at all.” So said President Trump today, using the royal “we.” #trump #KingTrump
