Is EUROPOL afraid of journalists (and researchers)? Please circulate in your networks: in the context of researching AI in law enforcement, on Aug. 1 I registered to attend EDEN, an annual conference on data protection & policing, co-organized by Academy of European Law & Europol. THREAD👇

On Sept. 10, I received indications to access the conference, in The Hague. Everything seemed fine. But things changed. On Sept. 13, Academy of European Law emailed saying they discovered I am a journalist and that - as such - I had to pass through a media accreditation and their press office.

But it was too late and they had to decline my participation in the conference. Academy of European Law though, knew my profession since 2021, when I took part in another EDEN conference. This is how I am registered on their portal since then:

In their website, there’s no mention of any press accreditation process. In their whole website, there’s just one page with the name of a director of corporate communications. Googling it, I discovered he quit the Academy in 2023. Clicking on his name, that’s what appears:

What happened then? In the past years, I have been part of major investigations into data protection risks in the EU, in connection as well with Europol's expanding mandate & with EDPS and the LIBE Committee Press work. European Ombudsman launched several inquiries thanks to our findings.

In 2024 our team, with Apostolis Fotiadis & Luděk Stavinoha, received a special mention at the European Press Prize, that recognizes the best investigative journalism in Europe. We have just been listed as finalists for another prestigious prize.

I hope to be wrong, but I have reasons to think that Academy of European Law acted under pressure from Europol. Europol has been on my radar for some time. In this case, I decided to take part in the conference with no publication in mind. I am researching for a nonprofit👇
