Think it’s less Kleber and more the archetype he represents. Floor spacing big man with some size who’s not run over immediately defensively on the back line. Coincidentally, the Lakers have a very, very good four man who’s coming back soon…

I agree that the five was his real position when we look back at this era but think question was asking us to look back farther than that.

Seems that JJ’s slowly assuming the opinion that Vando is a smallball five so if Hayes/Ayton/Kleber are all playing well, there’s limited PT available for Vando end of the day.

Kinda pointless to waive him. No need for dead money on the books, he becomes a big expiring / trade ballast next year and there is utility to having a situational long defender who can check dynamic guards / wings.

Not a bad thought process but I’m not a huge fan of dumping Vando just for the sake of dumping him. We have a tight set of assets, use the ones we have for meaningful deals (your deal is innocuous in that respect, I just see lots of attempts to dump Vando).

JJ very clearly doesn’t trust Koloko (behind Hayes and Vando smallball) and he’s seemingly not developing / getting reps here. Timme is flawed but Kleber shows the value of a stretch big with some floor game with this group here, particularly Luka.
