For #FolkloreThursday, a story set at the motte in #StJohnsTownofDalry - the site of a medieval castle. Recorded by Andrew Lang (The Academy 1885), oral tradition has it that a terrible serpent used to encircle the motte. The Lord of Galloway offered a reward for its slaying 1/2

The blacksmith of Dalry made himself a suit of armour fitted with retractable spikes. Letting the serpent swallow him, he triggered the spikes, rolled around & forced his way out of the carcass. It was so mangled that the Water of Ken is said to have ran red for 3 days! 2/2

#SiteOfTheWeek This beautiful medieval brooch was found in #StJohnsTownOfDalry. Made of silver with gilded decorative plaques, it's likely the work of a local goldsmith dating to the 13th or 14th centuries. These brooches could also act as a form of portable bullion. #LoveDandG
