Dragon No. 12. February 1978. Cover by Elrohir. Mr. Rob Kuntz adds the Cthulhu mythos to D&D. There's a preview of Andre Norton's first ever D&D novel, Quag Keep. Notes on the historical Druid. A new look at the Illusionist class. And much more. Solid issue.

Tolkien on the Boomers: "And Atanamir lived to a great age, clinging to his life beyond the end of all joy; and he was the first of the Nรบmenรณreans to do this, refusing to depart until he was witless and unmanned, and denying to his son the kingship at the height of his days."

Take the fox passage from Tolkienโ€™s LOTR. A modern editor would look at this and say cut it. It adds nothing to the story. It brings up a bunch of questions of whether all animals are sentient (opening a lot of rabbit-holes). And it takes away time from the main conflict. /2

I will no longer be saying โ€œspaceโ€; instead, I will exclusively refer to that area as โ€œthe Firmamentโ€ or โ€œthe Heavensโ€ per tradition. I will not be taking questions at this time. ๐ŸŒŒ

โ€œSo it may be said that the chief purpose of life, for any one of us, is to increase according to our capacity our knowledge of God by all the means we have, and to be moved by it to praise and thanks.โ€ - Tolkien, Letter 310
