The famous German sculptor Wit Stwosz (Veit Stoss) began creating his life's work, the intricately carved wooden altarpiece in St. Mary's Basilica in Kraków, #OTD in 1477.
This masterpiece is said to be the largest Gothic altarpiece in the world.
