Chaz Thompson from Snakes 'N' Adders Snakes’N’Adders provided us with a REPTA update regarding legislation, pushing for and maintaining higher standards around exotic animal movement and welfare within the reptile sector. Education is vital for raising the awareness bar for welfare.

Graínne Hartigan explained how the process of cryopreservation is banking species genetics for the future, and why reptiles require a unique approach due to their distinct physiology, environmental parameters impacting timeframes, and contamination risks to unique groups.🧬

Francis Cosquieri delivered the last presentation of the conference, sharing his expertise in the acclimation of snakes into captive care within new environments. Animals undergo various levels of stress during the process and can be susceptible to unseen diseases. 🐍

The conference may be over, but we’re still recalling Mark O’Shea’s tall tales from the field like a fever dream after a rattlesnake bite! ✨ His evening talk about being ‘An Herpetologist’ was so entertaining and included photographic evidence of his very short shorts! 🩳😳🐍

Hoppy #worldfrogday everyone! 🐸 Spotted this common frog (Rana temporaria) resting in a pond while out on a site visit. It wasn’t a particularly sunny day but seeing wild animals in their natural habitats always feels like sunshine in my heart. ✨ — #native #amphibians #frogs

There are many colourful and diverse anuran species in the wild. Here in Britain we have some beautiful frogs and toads, including the Common Frog (Rana temporia), that despite being less colourful in appearance are just as special in character and native to our wild isles. 🐸

After emerging from hibernation in the spring, male adders perform intricate ‘dances’ as they compete for access to females. #DYK unlike some snake species, adders incubate their eggs internally and give birth to up to 20 live young in late summer?

Thanks to the Burgers' Zoo we will soon be embarking on the fourth census of endangered #amphibians at the #ArlequinReserve, focused primarily on the Mindo Harlequin Toad, but also on other threatened frogs such as the Pinocchio Rainfrog (#Pristimantis appendiculatus).
