My daughter wanted to read Frankenstein in 6th grade because I am always saying how much I love it. She has always loved reading and challenging herself, but she was getting lost in the beginning of the story. She was ready to give up. I gave her a copy of the graphic novel,

If you are a modern professional, focus on mastering the art of skimmable writing. Skimmable doesn’t mean short. It means well-organized, logical, and visually not an eye sore. It means reducing cognitive load for your reader. This skill is an investment you’ll use daily.

Once upon a classroom, I made them comply. And I was good at it. But. It never quite felt right. So, I learned (am still learning) to let them commit. And. It feels better. There, in the space between. Where kids have some room to grow. Mine. A room to grow.

I asked a colleague a simple question and left the conversation with about 15 great, fresh ideas for how to teach kids note-taking. Brilliant stuff that hadn’t even crossed my mind Imagine thinking that we know it all. 😅 Imagine thinking that we could do this on our own

This lesson is one reason I consistently emphasize that leadership work sits at the intersection of professional and personal growth. You don't become an effective leader without the personal growth component.

This year’s hack. When a student leaves the room, they tap the light w an elbow so I know not to send anyone else. (Or I know if my student teacher has sent someone out.) Come back in, tap the light off.

I like discussing words on a continuum with students. Slight changes of tone can aid in learning. Words we talked about today.

One of the biggest barriers to productivity is inefficient meetings. To stop wasting time, draining energy, and losing ideas, we should audit our meetings: (1) Could this be an email? (2) Does it need to be this long? (3) What would make it a better use of our time?

Neat activity (to reinforce freshmen understanding of dramatic irony) from my student teacher: What are the characters saying to each other vs. what they are thinking?

📊Research has found that classrooms differ a great deal in quality of discussions--and those differences impact comprehension development. Please see below for examples of differences. For a self-assessment and guide to quality talk about text, see amazon.com/Quality-Talk-A…

Not all criticism is constructive. Not all critics are thinking critically. Weak critiques attack your identity. Decent critiques challenge your ideas. Strong critiques sharpen your thinking and improve your ideas. Listen closely to the people who care enough to help you grow.

“The beauty of hexagonal thinking [is that it] provides a springboard for a creative discussion. When you give a small group of students a deck of hexagons and ask them to connect them however they choose, every group will come up with a different web for different reasons.”

We should never lose sight of the fact that high school is hard. It is one of the hardest things many of us ever have to do. 7-8 hours of required focus, all of our movements (eating, going to bathroom etc) policed at all times, constant work we may or may not have interest in.
