Why do drivers complain about people riding bikes as though they are the ones in danger? With all the lecturing about ‘blowing through stop signs’ and wearing reflective clothing you’d never guess they were the ones protected by air bags and a thousand kilograms of steel.

It has been an honour to work on the complete renewal of Shaarey Zedek Synagogue. A new river-side entrance is being framed here. An amazing challenge to introduce new design to one of Winnipeg’s greatest Modernist buildings and a vital place for its community.

It always amazes me. Something that is such an important source of freedom and independence to us as kids, evolves into a source of visceral distain and anger to so many of us as adults.

New owner of the Winnipeg Sun sure thinks only drivers matter. Being a leader means supporting things you don’t necessarily do yourself, but decision makers experiencing the issues facing alternate transportation users would likely create new bike and transit advocates.

When you road trip in the States and stay off the freeway, you find all kinds of interesting things. Like the bank (now a brew pub) opened by Taylor Swift’s Great Grandfather, Archie Dean Swift Sr., in Ridgway, Pennsylvania.

Amazing building in Johnsonburg, Pennsylvania. Called the Brick Block, built in 1890. An original Live/Work design. Shops on the ground floor with a home above each. Weather protected overhang for an entire city block of the town’s Main Street.

Wandering through downtown Philadelphia, every so often you stumble across a narrow street from more than two centuries ago, lost to time in the shadows of large modern buildings. An incredible sense of place that no North American city would ever allow to be built today.

Philadelphia’s Elfreths Alley is the oldest residential street in America. One of the homes is for sale. 👉 139elfrethsalley.com

I have always loved this 1970’s Winnipeg strip mall. When commercial architecture mattered. Elegant brick curves with beautiful patterning. Diagonal cedar soffits. Nice lit sign boxes. Downspouts thoughtfully integrated into rounded brick corners, draining to landscape planters.

Imagine if instead of rewarding people for driving bigger vehicles and longer distances, we had used this quarter of a billion dollars (so far) to make impactful investments in addressing homelessness and poverty.
