Story in the Winnipeg Free Press. Redevelopment of Portage Place Mall is moving ahead quickly. I’m proud to be playing a part in building a new future for our downtown. Number TEN Architectural Group winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/2…

Trump mad that another country violated the rules of a trade agreement with the US. That sound you hear is 41 million Canadians rolling their eyes.

I do hope at some point we start discussing a future for Canada that is about more than pulling things out of the ground and selling them.

Fun to see the City of Winnipeg dipping its toe into the Scramble Crossing waters. Next up River and Osborne? Then….dare I say it….Portage and Main?

Heartbreaking to hear the Thunderbird Restaurant has closed. A drive-in diner that opened in 1961. Yet another piece of Winnipeg’s soul is lost.

When your neighbourhood street is designed to be a high-volume traffic sewer, you get a Nissan crashed through a fence and a broken Ferrari on a flatbed. This at the hour when hundreds of kids are walking on that sidewalk to the two high schools at the end of the street.

I’ve probably mentioned this before, but I HATE the fact that Winnipeg has a surface parking lot in the middle of its most popular urban plaza. (Old Market Square)

I love this little bit of terrace housing hidden away in downtown Winnipeg. If you’ve ever asked yourself, I wonder what used to be where all those giant parking lots are today? The answer is most often, some version of this.

My column tomorrow: On Friday, Winnipeg became the latest North American city to effectively eliminate single family zoning, allowing 2-4 homes on every lot city-wide as-of-right. This will reshape our neighbourhoods over time, allowing more “missing middle” housing to be built.

Join me tomorrow for a slow-paced bike tour through downtown Winnipeg for the Winnipeg Architecture Foundation. Fun facts, fun stories, and whatever else comes to my mind at the time.

Adding to my column about new zoning regulations for Winnipeg neighbourhoods. Developers could really help make infill more palatable by engaging designers. Nice proportions. A peaked roof. A porch. It doesn’t take much. These awkward flat facades need to stop.

Had a great time tonight doing a bike tour of downtown for the Winnipeg Architecture Foundation. I have run out of fun facts. Felt a bit like the Pied Piper.
