Reducing the width of car lanes might be the easiest, fastest, cheapest way to improve traffic safety. But it's treated like some kind of extreme re-do that requires everyone's useless input. Every time the crew goes out to resurface or repaint, they could be lane dieting.

Ok, just for fun, three maps: 1) The outline of Paris, within the Périphérique, overlaid on central Toronto. 2) Toronto subway lines and stations within that area (including Crosstown). 3) Paris Métro lines (1-14) and stations within that same area.

Vancouver has studied the costs of providing infrastructure and services to different residential densities. Single-family suburban homes cost FIVE to NINE times more than urban apartments per capita. 👏Stop👏expanding👏the👏urban👏boundary👏 metrovancouver.org/boards/Regiona…

"As reported by The Globe and Mail, residents spent a total of $181 million at curbside patios within 13 weeks of summer in 2021. If those spaces had remained dedicated to parking, only $3.7 million would have been reaped during the same time period." #BlackFridayParking

I hear you want to get more people downtown…my recommendation #1, make it an enjoyable place for people to be outside of a car! #urbandesign #citybuilding

#topoli An entire street wall of at-grade, sidewalk adjacent windows, covered up (in this case for liquor store shelving). Example [insert large number here] of the fatuous promise of condo podiums as replacements for mainstreet retail.

So often our large public spaces are surrounded by roads where vehicles separate people from the space. "Road moats" is a great name for this. It's important to consider how we want people to access these spaces!

In Azure Magazine, I write about Montreal urbanism, double-loaded corridors, building code reform, and why the Communist-era Prague apartment of my childhood was the most luxurious place I've ever lived. azuremagazine.com/article/montre…

"Fire departments are consistently the most vocal opponents of any proposed road diets, including sidewalks, bus lanes, and bike lanes. This is despite the fact that fire departments spend more time responding to car crashes than fires." Brad Hargreaves thesisdriven.com/p/on-fire-depa…

The City of Montreal has announced the continuation of 9 summer pedestrian streets for another 3 years. Each local merchants association will receive $700,000 annually to build, program and maintain the popular pedestrian spaces. 📍 Montreal 🇨🇦

Many of us at Ottawa City Council have the same position as my colleague @JLeiper. "Neither residents nor Queen's Park can blame cyclists for congestion on Parkdale Avenue or Merivale Road." This is senseless provincial overreach. ottawacitizen.com/opinion/leiper… via @ottawacitizen

According to a study from a few years ago, the amount of road space given to bikes in Montreal’s boroughs ranged from 0.6% to 2.5%. The amount of space given to cars ranged from 63% to 89%. The bike number is probably a little higher today, but still. War on cars? I think not.
