It is empowering for artists to share their culture through their art. Especially when representing an identity that has gone vastly unnoticed. Tune in this Monday 7pm on 2SER 107.3 to catch Bethany Tracey & Isabella Michie’s interview with👑Sampa The Great👑 #YMF
Described as the ‘Zambian-born, Botswana-raised, Australia-based’ artist in the start of her career, Sampa The Great quickly graduated to being known as ‘Australia’s own’ as we embraced her as one of us, further fueling her to highlight her cultural pride in her music. [1/2]
“The goal isn’t to come back & be like, “Guys I’m Zambian,” it’s coming back & saying it with assurance. Before, there was doubt. Now it’s fully claimed from being back home & immersing myself & working with my people. That’s where the confidence now” - Sampa The Great [2/2]
Her innate storytelling ability, expert songwriting, & unshakeable presentation of musical ideas has solidified Sampa The Great as one of the front-runners in Australia's new wave of hip hop. [1/2]
Can’t wait to hear the queen on Yours, Mine & Femme! next Monday! So much excite!!!!
Cultural identity has always played a compelling role in Sampa The Great ‘s body of work. But the pandemic influenced her to go back to her roots in a way she was never prepared for or even planned.
[1/3] "I’d never fully claimed myself to be Zambian, because I wasn’t fully raised in Zambia. That fear to me of, “I wasn’t really raised there, so am I truly this because even at home they’d say…’, that has just vanished, just from actually being here" - Sampa The Great
[2/3] "Being here and working with artists from here, seeing the struggle of being a Zambian musician, versus Zambian musicians telling you about their struggles" - Sampa The Great
[3/3] "Actually being a Zambian artist who is struggling to make their art, regardless of being ‘Sampa The Great’, I actually had to feel that, I actually had to be at home to understand that" - Sampa The Great
For her latest project: As Above, So Brave, Sampa The Great is collaborating with The Avalanches, Baker Boy, #EmmanuelJagariChanda (#WITCH) and Angelique Kidjo, Tony Allen, M W A N J É
Returning to international touring, Sampa The Great and her live Zambian band have performed at Coachella, Glastonbury Festival, Primavera Sound and Lollapalooza, Australia’s V̷ivid and RISING festivals.
“There’s no fear in standing in my identity, for fear that I wouldn’t be claimed at home. That’s finished. The 2 years have really healed that bit of me that was unsure, or felt like I didn't belong. That’s gone” - Sampa The Great on her musical evolution through the pandemic.
