🚨Exciting Update! We’re piloting new ways to plant trees in #Boston! 🌳Porous paving materials & stormwater #treepits will help water trees, prevent tree roots from breaking through the sidewalk and allow stormwater to absorb back into our aquifers. #GreenInfrastructure

It was a tremendous honor to be serve as the President Boston City Council. Representing the most diverse council district in the city, it’s critical we work together to ensure Boston works for all, including our immigrant neighbors, communities of color and working families.#bospoli

Have you seen the bioretention feature at South St and Bussey St in the Arnold Arboretum #JamaicaPlain #Boston? The vegetation in this feature (and the microorganisms in their roots) removes pollutants from the stormwater runoff from the adjacent roadways (improves💧 quality.)

Did you know that many porous paving materials are compliant with Americans with Disabilities Act (#ADA)? The City is now using poured in place porous paving materials in public spaces from a list of approved products developed in collaboration with the Disabilities Commission

Happy #InternationalWomensDay! Our Office (pictured) values the contributions of women today, and all those who came before that (de)paved the road for us. While #greeninfrastructure has a lot of women in the industry, we’re actively working to get more women of color to join! 💪

Our annual Construction Season Kick-Off Meeting is underway at a packed Florian Hall. The meeting allows multiple City of Boston departments to review safety protocols & set expectations for utility companies & private contractors performing work on our streets and sidewalks. 🦺

#greeninfrastructure helps #Boston both mitigate and adapt to climate change. GI reduces flooding that comes with more frequent and intense storms; and, trees and other vegetated features help sequester carbon and reduce rising temperatures.

Happy #ArborDay #Boston! 🌳 Today the OGI was at the Zoo New England in #Dorchester alongside BHA youth from Franklin Field. We spent a wonderful day building #greeninfrastructure rain gardens and planting trees! #FundingUrbanForestry USDA Forest Service

GI vs. Not GI: Porous Paving! 🌧️ 1st video: Impervious bricks that don’t allow water to absorb into the ground, collecting pollutants that go to our waterways. 2nd video: #GreenInfrastructure porous paving that comes in different colors & absorbs water to prevent flooding.

OGI hosted a fun #greeninfrastructure tour in downtown #Boston yesterday with members of the City’s GI Working Group! The group visited three GI sites: - City Hall Plaza - rain gardens and grass pavers in Dewey Square, and  - the green roof at 1 Federal Street!

#greeninfrastructure like this rain garden and porous paving can be overlooked, but GI features are carefully designed by engineers & landscape architects to manage stormwater! If you’re in Peabody Square in #Dorchester, rest on the benches and read our signs about how GI works!
