“Work smarter, not harder” is a nice sentiment; but reality is - some of us are NOT working HARD enough. Want more customers? Go out into the world and tell an abundance of people about your business. That doesn’t take strategy; that takes effort. #BusinessOfCurling

The #BrandOfCurling Symposium in Kelowna exceeded expectations! Attendees were curious, open-minded, and eager to contribute to conversations. Presenters were in the slot. An abundance of ideas were formulated - now it’s time for action. Props to Curl BC for their leadership.

Curling is back and better than ever! The 2024-2025 record of registered curlers in Canada shows that not only has curling participation recovered from COVID-19, it is stronger than ever. This is a record high since data collection started in 2016. Way to go curling community 👏

If curling clubs were truly "open for business", they'd have a product to sell for more than one month at the onset of curling season. If you want to grow, one intake is no longer sufficient. Programs that start in the fall and end in the spring is not a law, it's a choice.

Two things can be true at once. Curling Clubs can value volunteers and employ staff; take action for public benefit and personal advancement; honour tradition and pursue innovation. It's not either/or, it's both/and. #BusinessOfCurling Not buying it? Let's agree to disagree 😉

I get it. Clubs were founded not to make money, but to produce communal benefits. They’re non-commercial ventures where members, not the market, resource activities. I like it. I will only say that it’s not easy to sustain the treehouse model (alone) given modern realities.

As you’re planning for curling season, remember this: Curling Clubs are play spaces. You’re in the business of fun. Make being at your facility fun. Plan fun activities. Conduct fun meetings. Have fun yourself (it’s contagious). Fun is your job. #BusinessOfCurling

In recent past, the greatest obstacle to growth has been mindset. People said "That'll never work." or "We've always done it this way." Presently, the number one obstacle to growth is capacity. People now say "What a great idea... but who's going to do that?!" #BusinessOfCurling

My home curling club is celebrating 75 Years. This is no small feat. It's estimated that less than 1% of small businesses reach such a milestone. Curling is a special sport, the people that play it together form a special community, and the benefits are extensive and enduring.

Low membership fees at the expense of financial sustainability is not an act of generosity. It’s an act of selfishness disguised as generosity. I’m going to go hide now 🫣 #BusinessOfCurling
