Cape Verde-type hurricanes are those Atlantic basin tropical cyclones that develop into tropical storms fairly close (<1000 km [600 mi] or so) of the Cape Verde Islands and then become hurricanes before reaching the Caribbean. Typically, this may occur in August and September.

People in hurricane-prone areas should use the current lull to prepare, because it won’t last. By mid-to-late September, a significant pulse of convection is forecast to develop over the Atlantic and Africa, raising storm risks.
