The fact that this is the second police commissioner to resign under suspicious or controversial circumstances within a single mayoral term raises tough questions about the Adams Administration’s ability to govern our city in a stable and trustworthy manner.

Shame on Columbia. These policies are antithetical to the very mission of higher ed and these institutions. The suppression of faculty and student expression is an affront to the purpose of the university as a site of learning and debate and a microcosm of democratic practice.

Let me get this straight: the NYPD opened fire on the subway yesterday in an attempt to stop a man who evaded the $2.90 fare (?), and in the process they ended up shooting him, 2 bystanders, and another cop? The caption accompanied by the community note below is *wild*.

For $2.90. A cop opened fire. For $2.90. A bystander, shot in the head, is in critical condition & another bystander and cop were shot as well. For $2.90. Let us never normalize this harm/violence. What is considered a crime is socially constructed. search.app/4hPAPibEYmh8nB…

The NYPD spent $150 Million *extra* last year to catch people who weren't able to afford to pay the subway fare. They owed just $104,000. $150 million could buy free fares (at going rate) for 95,000 poor New Yorkers per year. Instead four people shot, including an officer.

Yeah. I read Jodi Kantor's piece about John Roberts. And while the report wasn't surprising to me, it highlights something people need to understand: Roberts is in the tank for Trump and will help him in this election if he can. My latest in The Nation thenation.com/article/politi…

Sociologists & adjacent (and we're serious about the adjacent) do you or a friend/colleague/frolleague have a book released/releasing between 2023 and March 2025? Do you want to have a discussion of that book at ESS 2025 (in March, in Boston)? If so submit a proposal by 10/1.

Brooklyn subway rider struck in head by stray NYPD bullet has brain damage: family Gregory Delpeche was on the way to the hospital job he has worked for more than 20 years when he was hit by a stray slug fired by an NYPD cop. trib.al/9xuEu7e

Louisiana Republican Senator John Kennedy tells Arab American Institute executive director Maya Berry: “You should hide your head in a bag.” Republicans are not even trying to conceal their bigotry anymore.

Just to sum up some recent reporting on the NYPD shooting of Derell Mickles on the subway: The NYPD has somehow misplaced the knife they allege Mickles threatened them with, the killer cops are still on active duty, and bystander/victim Gregory Delpeche has brain damage.

URGENT: Marcellus Williams is scheduled for execution next week. He is INNOCENT. The Governor of Missouri can and should prevent this. Please reach out to him and ask him not to allow this execution to go forward!

We are proud to announce that members of the Pocan and Hoyle unit have secured historic Memorandums of Understanding. Today’s victories show that when congressional workers come together to bargain for the pay they deserve, they win—and we’re just getting started.

My article with Alex Sinha was accepted at the Harvard Civil Rights-Civil Liberties Law Review! We argue that the state’s off-loading of its carceral obligations toward incarcerated people violates the constitutional rights of the families who are forced to step in. (1/2)
