Hi! I’m Andrew Gael a math curriculum director at a school for SwD in Harlem. I think a hotdog is a sandwich! #swdmathchat

Q1: What are your experiences with family communication and partnership? #SwDMathChat

A1: We generally have very good relationships with families at our school, because it has taken a lot of work and advocacy to get their children to our school. So our families are pretty committed to our school community. #SwDMathChat

Q2: How have the events of the last few years (e.g. COVID; remote learning) impacted your communication with families? #SwDMathChat

A4: We use Seesaw for digital portfolios and ongoing family communication via work samples, digital activities, and pics and videos of students working. #SwDMathChat

Q5: In your experiences, how do students participate in their own IEP process? What affordances and challenges are present? #SwDMathChat

Q6: In what ways do you facilitate family partnerships in the IEP process? #SwDMathChat

A6: We have IEP coordinators that work with families to advocate for students who struggle to advocate for themselves. They also take a lot of the paperwork/bureaucracy off of the teacher’s caseloads. #SwDMathChat

Q7: What could be improved or altered about the IEP process to increase family/student involvement? #SwDMathChat

A7: I agree with @joanna_hayman6 less edu jargon would go along way to increasing family and student involvement and access to the IEP process. Also focusing on implementing ways to have students lead their own IEP meetings. #SwDMathChat
