No, that’s not an eel, or a snake… or a worm. his critter is a legless amphibian! Meet Beddome’s caecilian. Growing ~10.8 in (27.5 cm) long, it inhabits parts of India’s Western Ghats mountains. When threatened, it can secrete smelly fluids from its skin & burrow into the soil.

The beautiful Centropyge nahackyi is a very rare angelfish found only on deep reefs of Johnston Atoll and occasionally Hawaii. When I went to Johnston back in 2006 they were quite common below 35m depth, and, unlike other pygmy angelfishes, surprisingly easy to photograph!

🌳 The loss of #forests threatens the survival of many species and reduces their ability to provide essential services. Over half of the tropical forests worldwide have been destroyed since the 1960s. Forest landscape restoration can reverse these losses. #ForestDay

The titan arum is a wonder of the natural world, with flowering structures that can reach three metres in height. My friends in Sumatra just sent me these photos of one in the wild - in bud - located today ✨

One of the most ridiculous male anglerfishes (Rhynchactis sp) I have observed. Caught it between 1,200 and 1,500 meters depth, Gulf of Mexico, May 2017 - from a DEEPEND cruise (see deependconsortium.org).

Meet the brown basilisk! Growing ~2 ft (0.6 m) long, this lizard can often be found darting through the trees. And it’s just as quick when running or swimming: In fact, by moving rapidly & creating air pockets with its long rear toes, it can dash across water without sinking.
