On Sept. 5, 1942, U.S. Navy Messman Charles French swam through the night for 6 - 8 hours pulling a raft of 15 wounded sailors with a rope around his stomach through shark infested waters. French was the first black swimmer to earn the Navy Medal for his heroism in 1943.

Benjamin O. Davis Jr.: During World War II, he commanded the 99th Pursuit Squadron and the 332nd Fighter Group (both part of the Tuskegee Airmen) and became the first black general of the U.S. Air Force.

Lt. Gen. Frank Petersen Jr. was commissioned in the USMC in 1952 after serving 2 yrs in the US Navy. Petersen was the 1st Black Marine Corps aviator and the 1st Black Marine to be promoted to Brigadier General. Petersen retired as a Lieutenant General in 1988.
