It’s fall wildflower season in the southern pinelands, and stepping out the door Tall Timbers Research Station and Land Conservancy is a super-saturated, psychedelic experience. Here’s a glade lobelia for you

Longleaf pine and Wiregrass in the snow Tall Timbers Research Station and Land Conservancy. Go figure

Moccasin enjoying some late-winter sun Tall Timbers Research Station and Land Conservancy. I was debating how close to get for this shot

I just met fire ecologist Jonathan Coop; like me he changed career direction after a semester abroad in Monteverde, Costa Rica with UCEAP Study Abroad. One of the best things that ever happened to us. Thanks Jack Longino, Nalini Nadarni, Frank Joyce, UC, and especially people of Costa Rica

This has got to be the most spectacular red maple I’ve ever seen- the trunk is a meter across at chest height - right down here at cottonmouth junction Tall Timbers Research Station and Land Conservancy

I saw some exquisite longleaf pine-Wiregrass savanna today at Silver Lake WMA. Great job managing these woods, Georgia DNR Wildlife

We had such a great day yesterday testing ideas for easing the shock of reintroducing fire to longleaf pine stands that had not been burned in 85 yr. Auburn University Tall Timbers Research Station and Land Conservancy Southern Research

Tree down! I guess 65 years of annual burns in this long-running prescribed fire study Tall Timbers Research Station and Land Conservancy finally took a toll on this gigantic loblolly pine.

…and suddenly the gators have appeared Tall Timbers Research Station and Land Conservancy! There’s one in the center, looking with a jaundiced eye. It’s a thrill to share the landscape with large reptiles

Look closely and you will see a tree frog high-tailing it out of the flame zone up this highly inflammable live oak. I’m endlessly impressed by the street-smarts of little critters. Tall Timbers Research Station and Land Conservancy, Livingston Place
