I just returned from Moremi Game Reserve in Botswana. It was a refreshing and much needed “fix" after a long Jackson Hole winter, and the even longer pandemic. I needed to go back to Africa, my “Happy Place” where one can escape for a moment and see the earth as it once was.

(2/3)Southwest Montana basins are hurting the most for snowpack, which are of course the headwaters to the Missouri and many other prime recreational and agricultural irrigation rivers. The near-term NWS Climate Prediction Center outlooks aren't promising for even holding on to what we do have with

(3/3) above average temperatures forecast through the end of the month. With much of the state still in D3 (extreme) drought, I'm becoming increasingly concerned about what this summer is going to look like for our streams and rivers, agricultural impacts, as well as fire season

Fewer clouds than the aurora earlier in the week, but the activity was less than then at least when I was out. Still plenty of stars to add some interest though #MontanaMoment

Earlier this week Grizzly 399 pushed her four cubs out on their own, and not long after she was seen hanging out with a large male. It'll be interesting to see if any or how many of her sub-adults stick together this year as they figure things out for themselves. Happy Friday!

TOMORROW: a whistleblower, Western Watersheds, and I will be blowing the lid on a huge Wildlife Services corruption scandal in The Intercept. We’re going to be looking specifically at those wolf numbers. Please help us share it widely. It might help save some wolves.
