Reflections on National Institute for Health and Care Research event showcasing the Mental Health Research Investment. Obviously investment in mental health research is really welcome for far too long we have been underinvested in. It clear there is an appetite to fund mental health research (at long last) 1/7

There was very little acknowledgement of the long-term nature of these disease, or that most people’s experience of secondary mental health care is largely un-evidenced or researched 5/7

#coproduction #livedexperience a challenge for healthcare providers and educators. Do we genuinely learn from lived experience? or do we co-opt, re-write, or, whitewash people’s narrative? I have personally felt exploited and forced to share a story of recovery and resilience.

Which was ultimately personally detrimental. Contrast this with institutions who embraced my brokenness, raw authenticity and empowered me to tell of the gritty reality of apparent ‘mental illness.’ My story was unfiltered and genuine. This was empowering. This is coproduction

Two papers submitted today. One on burnout in parents caring for disabled children. The other on homicides & homicide-suicides perpetrated by unpaid carers. Hoping for swift, positive reviews🤞🏻🤞🏻so we can start using the findings to inform better policy & practice for carers.
