Big shout out to the team behind the UQ/CSL vaccine, on what must be an incredibly disappointing day. The time and commitment they have put in this year, under incredible stress and pressure deserves our thanks and recognition, regardless of the outcome. Science can be brutal.

People should stop calling SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccines a ‘miracle’. These vaccine are not miracles—they did not drop out of the sky. These vaccine are the result of decades of basic research. Everyone who likes the idea of vaccine miracles should support funding for basic research.

Amazing case report. The medicine of tomorrow. 5 week old boy admitted to NICU. Within 37 hours he had his whole genome sequenced, gene defect identified, treatment ordered and received by patient. Within 6 hr symptoms resolved. tinyurl.com/4emtz2p4

Thanks to Genetics AustralAsia for giving me the opportunity to present my #PhD research at #GSAA21. A fantastic conference full of engaging talks and an especially unique poster session. KennersonLaboratory ANZAC Institute

Please stop telling us just to commercialize our research. Without basic science there is nothing to translate - some of the worlds most important discoveries didn’t have obvious applications at the time theconversation.com/morrison-says-…

Today is United Nations International Day of Women and Girls in Science. In 2022 it’s time to shift the focus from recruitment (which is not the main issue) to retention (which is an ongoing problem). This is the current situation in Australia👇🏻, lack of funding of women the biggest cause.

Out of the 7,000 rare diseases that have been identified so far, only about 5% have a treatment approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Most of these disorders are caused by a defect in a single gene, meaning many potentially can be treated by gene therapy.

Good luck to all biomedical researchers in Australia who have submitted applications for the NHMRC Investigator Grant (fellowships) scheme. The Equity in Australian STEMM team have now compared the 3 yr outcomes of the old fellowships scheme vs the new one. Results here 👇🏻 🧵 1/5

A word on equity. Those from poorly represented ancestry groups still have a greater yield of uncertain variants. Highlighting the need for us to do more. Then all of these great things we’ve just shared about the value of a genetic diagnosis can benefit ALL families /9
