People should stop calling SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccines a ‘miracle’. These vaccine are not miracles—they did not drop out of the sky. These vaccine are the result of decades of basic research. Everyone who likes the idea of vaccine miracles should support funding for basic research.

Today is United Nations International Day of Women and Girls in Science. In 2022 it’s time to shift the focus from recruitment (which is not the main issue) to retention (which is an ongoing problem). This is the current situation in Australia👇🏻, lack of funding of women the biggest cause.

Out of the 7,000 rare diseases that have been identified so far, only about 5% have a treatment approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Most of these disorders are caused by a defect in a single gene, meaning many potentially can be treated by gene therapy.
