Have to admire how succinctly Dani Rodrik has encapsulated this fundamental tension at the heart of contemporary political economy.

The US and Canada are outliers in shutting out Chinese EVs. Other countries, particularly in the developing world, see an opportunity to get investment from China—and they’re using tariffs as leverage. Glad I could contribute to this Financial Times piece.

I've now made this figure more accurate. China dominates the entire range of renewable energy manufacturing even more than I initially suggested. These numbers are astonishing.

This explains a lot of the myopia in Biden policy circles re green industrial policy (as Adam Tooze recently put it, “high on their own supply”). Key US firms who benefit from IRA have been ignorant of dynamics of global economic and technological change.

I wonder if there are similar regrets within Ford for leaving Brazil not so long ago…
