#onthisday in 1666 the first meeting of the Court of Governors was held at Bethlem. An excerpt from the Minutes explains that this was because of a "fierce & lamentable" fire at Bridewell Hospital. (There are only 2 commas in this whole piece of writing, remember to breathe...)

We're often asked about 'secretly' held patients at Bethlem. The most famous case is James Tilly Matthews-bit.ly/2UXfCXD. To prove his sanity he designed a new Hospital building. Rejected by the Governors, they did award him £30 for his efforts.

In 2011 Patrick & Henry Cockburn’s ‘Henry’s Demons: Living with Schizophrenia, A Father & Son’s Story’ was released. ‘There is poetry in this prose’, said one reviewer, ‘the bipolarity of misery and exaltation that Blake understood’. This Saturday, 11am bit.ly/3T9wZDB

#otd in 1949, artist Bryan Charnley was born. We hold 7 of his works including 'Sleep'. Diagnosed with schizophrenia in adolescence, Charnley was said to have found sleep a great refuge & used dreams as a source of imagery & inspiration such as in this painting.
