The S&P recently had its 7th “near” bear market since WW2 with a drop of 18.9%. In the year after the prior six, the market was higher all six times for an average gain of 13.4%. Have a look:

The S&P has stabilized with less volatility over the last few weeks, giving it a chance to re-charge for an eventual breakout to new highs.  The index needs to gain about 2.9% from its current level to make a new all-time high.

The Energy sector $XLE surged 5.6% last week as oil prices soared on the Israel/Iran conflict.  Energy is currently the only sector in extreme overbought territory, while most other sectors have moved back down into neutral territory.

Futures are rebounding after Friday’s pullback, with the S&P now 2.9% from record highs. Energy jumped 5.6% last week on Middle East tensions and is now the only overbought sector, though it remains in a downtrend. Start a trial to read today's full Morning Lineup!
